Installing Sharepoint Designer 2007Microsoft SharePoint Designer (formerly known as Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer) is a specialized HTML editor and web design freeware for creating or modifying Microsoft SharePoint sites and web pages. Back in the late 1990's the web development community became abuzz with the concept of WYSIWYG web design. WYSIWYG simply means What You See Is What You Get. This concept and technology allowed web developers and site administrators to rapidly design and deploy their webpages without the need to update code, switch windows, and reload their page in their browser window to see how their coding affected the look and feel of the page. Now they would be able to essentially click and drag their way around their page and design, customize and align content visually as opposed to contextually. Microsoft, like many others, jumped on this bandwagon and produced a top-notch product called FrontPage. It was branded as part of the Microsoft Office suite from 1997 to 2003. With it's inclusion into Office Suite, many people were able to become involved in the creation of their own websites without having to necessarily rely on hiring a development or consulting company. In 2003 FrontPage was discontinued. Many people thought they had been led astray or left in the dark from this decision by Microsoft. However, many people didn't realize that in fact they had branched off the FrontPage project into two very separate programs. One being Microsoft Expression Studio and the other being Sharepoint Designer. Microsoft Expression Studio is a suite of tools for designing and building web and Windows client applications and rich digital media content. It's core audience is intermediate and advanced level developers who aren't afraid of dealing with code and other complex elements of web development. Sharepoint Designer focussed primarily on designing local and public sites that are built directly off of the Microsoft Sharepoint platform. Although it is primarily used with Sharepoint Server it is also quite capable of helping beginners design a basic html website on their own and being able to establish their own web presence without costly overhead. Microsoft was gracious enough to offer Sharepoint Designer 2007 as a free(ware) download for anyone to use.
