The title of the documentary comes from the French culinary term Mise En Place, the expression for everything in place the rigorous preparation of ingredients and equipment that leads to success in the kitchen. The documentary will follow Team Delhi as they learn that Mis En Place applies not only in the kitchen, but in life. For the last ten years, Delhi student teams have been cooking, competingand winning! Two years ago the team won a silver medal at the American Culinary Federations national championships in Las Vegas; they have captured the state title eight times and regionals four times. We will follow the five-member Team Delhi during the 2009-2010 school year. Our cameras will track the students from try-outs in September, through the busy school year to final competitions in the spring. We will also meet the students' friends, families, teachers, traveling to their hometowns and job sites to capture the fabric of their lives. Team Delhis young men and women are in their late teens and early 20s, from ordinary rural and urban backgrounds, a majority from the Catskills region. Many are from working-class or struggling families and were not able to attend elite, expensive colleges. Instead, they chose a community college and are preparing for the demanding and competitive world of high cuisine. According to team coach Chef Tom Recinella, the students continually perform at a level that goes well beyond their years, and their preparation for competition is, in important ways, preparation for life.
