Why use special camera rigs when you can move the camera within software programs? It depends on what exactly you are after, but if you want to save time during the animation process - the software technique is just as good in some situations as using a physical rig. It's not the solution to every camera move, but it is extremely useful in adding an extra amount of character to your shots. The only things you can't do are large sweeping pans and zooms where there are a lot of foreground objects. You can suppliment foreground objects using objects that are animated and green-screened in though. It just depends on how crazy you want to get within After Effects.
