MaximsNewsNetwork: CLIMATE CHANGE COPENHAGEN UN SG BAN KI-MOONMaximsNewsNetwork: 08 December 2009 - UNTV - United Nations: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters today that he feels encouraged and optimistic about the ongoing Climate Change negotiations in Copenhagen. He expects a robust agreement that will be effective immediately and include specific recommendations on mitigation, adaptation, finance and technology. Copenhagen can and must be the turning point in the worlds efforts to prevent runaway climate change and usher in a new era of green growth for all, he said. When asked about an email scandal called climategate involving the publication of hacked emails on websites run by climate change skeptics, he said that nothing has cast any doubt on the basic scientific message that humans are the primary cause of climate change. He added that his decisions are based on the scientific evidence and information from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changes (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report in 2007. Turning back to Copenhagen , he said he was encouraged that the negotiations were proceeding reasonably well with, full participation and a sense of flexibility and compromise and was sure that world leaders would take necessary action. He added that never have so many different nations of all sizes and economic status made so many firm pledges together to combat climate change. More than 100 world leaders including US President Barack Obama, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India are expected to attend the high-level negotiations next week in Copenhagen.
