Angel Darina.

UPDATED 21.2.10
Darina was born on 15.06.2003. At the age of three she was diagnosed with rare form of leukemia. She was in need of at about 300 000 euro for a bone marrow transplantation in Israel - unaffordable amount of money for her family (and for almost any other family I guess). A charity campaign for donations was started and Darina touched so many hearts all over the country - thousands of people donated and the money were collected in at about 3 months. This was never seen before in Bulgaria. Dari had (and still have) the magic power to touch the hearts in a very specail way. So the money were collected and she went to Israel in time to receive her lifesaving treatment. The most suitable bone marrow donor was her mother (even she was not a perfect match) and on 15.03.2007 Dari underwent an successful bone marrow transplantation (as the professor said). For our great sorrow, unfortunately, Dari caught a flu-like infection, with a virus which would be harmless for a healthy human, but could easy kill a child whose immune system is so weak (due to the transplantation related immune supressing treatment). Two and a half months after the transplantation (on 30.05.2007), at the hospital in Israel, precious little Darina flew on her way to Heaven. No more pain for her tender body.
From Edisweet ^ Thankyousomuch.

Darina was so young when she passed on after battling an extremely rare form of Leukemia for a while. I am unaware of her birthdate, nor the date she went to Heaven, or her age because her webpage is in Bulgarian. She recieved chemotherapy and was raising money to get a donor for herself to survive. This letter was written by her sister, Lora who tried so desperatley along with others, to save little Darina whom was called "Dari" :

That's the story I have to tell and I hope it turns into a story about many battles won. In the last two months, life showed us one of its ugliest faces. On the 6th of October 2006 my little sister Darina was brought to the emergency room of the St. Marina University Hospital in Varna with fever, joint pains and overall feebleness. A number of supposed diagnoses (acute pielonefritis, Australian syndrome, reactive arthritis) gradually melted down to the suspicion that she has some sort of blood disease. The numerous punctures (samples from the bone marrow in her spine and hip joint) put together the macabre puzzle and confirmed that my sister is suffering from acute non-lymphoblast leukemia - M5.

Leukemia in itself has many forms, but they have common symptoms. Typical for the disease is the intensive formation of granulocytes (leukocytes) in the bone marrow, as well as in the liver and milt. The number of cells from the granulocyte/leukocyte category in the blood and bone marrow increases characteristically 1 to 100-fold. It begins with complaints of getting easily tired, loss of appetite, nausea, a feeling of heaviness in the left thigh. Then, there come the pains in the bones because of the growing bone marrow and the intensified blood formation The patients lose weight to the point of emaciation because of their faster metabolism.

In Dari's case, the cancer cells have accumulated in the blood and bone marrow. After consultations with several physicians we heard the same answer, "Her form of leukemia is very rare and ends lethally in about 75% of the cases. But still, treatment is possible." Unfortunately, Bulgarian specialists have very little experience with this particular form. As an alternative we were told to consider clinics abroad - in France, Israel or Germany.

Currently, Dari is undergoing a course of chemotherapy. We at home were given a thorough explanation about the consequences of this course. Still, we were unable to prepare for the sheer horror we experienced after the first phase of the course. Words fail me to describe the enormous change through which my little sister's body went.

The crisis, which my family and I are now going through, the nightmare we experienced in the days of waiting, woke up a part of me that summoned up courage to scream out into the world a passionoate appeal for help:

I want to buy my sister's life!

Please, help me!

***I tried to no avail to find evidence of there ever was a donor found, or if she went through with the BMT, but she did eventually pass.
