Vernissage EVA & ADELE - Dauergeil

Premiere in Germany: White Trash Contemporary is thrilled to present paintings by EVA&ADELE

DAUERGEIL - Paintings and Drawings, Oct.19 to Nov. 23, 2007
Opening: Friday, October 19, 2007, starting at 7pm

In the art world EVA & ADELE are known for their continuous performances during important art events, such as the Venice Biennale, Documenta or Art Basel, true to the motto "wherever we are is museum". Everyone seems to know EVA&ADELE. Some sneer and consider them art groupies while others revere them as courageous figures of the avant-garde. Two dazzling personalities who are leading a radical life outside normal conventions for almost 20 years now. They carry out their public appearances in custom-tailored fantasy suits, high heels and impeccable make-up with friendly smiles and perfect politeness. Which makes their performances even more provocative. Who are these people and what do they want? Nothing more than to remind us: Look, we are a living work of art, a Gesamtkunstwerk, reinvented, planned and performed every day.

Beyond their daily performances EVA & ADELE have created an impressive body of visual works -- paintings, drawings, photography and videos -- not widely publicized yet. EVA & ADELE's skillfully executed large scale paintings are based on photographs taken by spectators or the artists themselves. These day by day photographs become part of complex compositions consisting of figurative and abstract elements set forth and back against one another to invite viewers to discover more layers of meaning behind the picture puzzle. Delicate landscape sketches are overlaid by the silhouette of a horse and pointillist surfaces entwine a goddess figure. Like a watermark each painting also contains a semi abstract portrait of the artists. Art historical references to artists such as Magritte, Picasso or Picabia are used intentionally and encourage viewers to take a look behind the curtain into a sercet erotic universe.

EVA & ADELE's paintings raise questions about sexual identity. In our multimedia driven world, desire, passion and lust have been transformed into standardized role plays used as advertisement images to stimulate consumer behavior. Our visual erotic vocabulary is dominated by cheap pornographic downloads from the internet. In regards to sex, art certainly can not claim to be a reliable guide, but it constitutes fresh and living proof that sexual self-determination beyond traditional gender conventions is possible despite the porn aesthetics propagated by the mass media. Humanity and love are EVA & ADELE's driving force and it activates our phantasies, dreams and fears. Allow yourself to be seduced!

EVA & ADELE have had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows in the Sprengel Museum, Hannover (Germany); The Nordic Watercolour Museum, Skärhamn (Sweden); Les Abattoirs, Toulouse (France); Villa Aurora, Los Angeles (USA); Moderne Galerie Saarland Museum, Saarbruecken (Germany); Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin (Germany).

EVA & ADELE have participated in the following group shows: Klasma - Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki (Finland); Musée des Beaux-Arts, Bordeaux (France); Kunsthalle Wien, Wien (Austria); Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin (Germany); Schirn-Kunsthalle, Frankfurt/Main (Germany); Museum Bojmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (Netherlands); Akademie der Kuenste, Berlin (Germany); Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Gent (Belgien); Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (Japan); Kunsthaus Zürich, Zürich (Switzerland); PS 1 Center of Contemporary Art, New York (USA)

In 2008, there will be a comprehensive restrospective in the Museum der Moderne, Salzburg (Austria) and in the Kunstmuseum Linz (Austria).
